Talking for writing

Often the hardest part of writing is getting started. If you are struggling to get started on a piece of writing, or are unsure on how you should structure your writing, try stepping away from your computer.

Picture yourself having a conversation with someone who is interested in the topic you are writing about and reply out loud. Ideas can flow so much more quickly when we are speaking compared to when we are forced to sit down and write something perfectly. Take notice of what you say- the phrases you use, how you connect different ideas, and how the information flowed from one point to the next. It can even be useful to record yourself speaking so that you can immerse yourself in your verbal response.

Once you have done that, you can come back to your computer and adapt your verbal response to the page.
